The cupcakes look so charming I’m thankful of the queue as we stand procrastinating. The flavours are creative without being too experimental and eventually Jaffa and Fresh Strawberry are selected with the promise of a return visit.
It is difficult to fault these little treats. The frosting wasn’t overly sweet but rather complimented its counterpart. Within the cake I struggle to find evidence of real fruit (as claimed) however it is of little concern when it tastes as good as this.
I have subsequently heard that Icing on the Cake do fantastic frozen yoghurt with a range of flavours on rotation. Walking past the cupcakes and opting for the healthy yoghurt will be challenging… but it has to be done.
As an admirer of the packaging design my expectations are high as I enter Petal’s Teed Street store. It’s not particularly hot outside (in fact it’s raining) however I immediately notice the frosting is mimicking that of Gaudi’s Sagrada Familia.
Unfortunately our Passionfruit cupcake is remarkable for the distinct lack of passionfruit flavour. The manufactured taste is in fact unidentifiable and not particularly pleasant; the cake is plain and unexciting. Our Red Velvet cupcake also disappoints with the depth of flavour falling short while the frosting is overwhelmingly sweet prompting a hasty gulp of tea.
Petal clearly have an established, loyal following – perhaps we caught them on a bad day.
